At the first Story Prize event, all the nominees had their work read aloud by a professional actress.

• Jane Curtain read Joan Silber.
• Maria from Sesame Street, Sonia Manzano, read Edwidge Danticat.
• And Kate Burton (daughter of Richard) read mine.

When I went on stage after Kate Burton’s reading, she gave me a hug.

I said, “We have the same birthday!”

“September 10th?” she asked.

“Yes!”
