Route Book

One of my prized possessions is a Route Book for the Great Wallace Show in 1899. It belonged to my great-great uncle, the elephant trainer who inspired THE CIRCUS IN WINTER. The route book was published at the end of the season and gave an account of the show’s activities for the year. They were sold to those who had been employed on the show that season. Sometimes stories and photos were included, but mostly it was about statistics. Cities visited. Dates played. Miles traveled. Number of railroads used. I measure my time on the road in terms of people I meet.
